This is a series inspired on a 1985 visit to Manitoulin island where seeing that strong sunlight create strong shadows of a table and flowers on a deck, I positioned a sheet of watercolour paper and outlined the shadows. I then painted in the non-shadows areas and added a inset with an image of the flowers. This is the first image in the series. The next step was to look for interesting shadow patterns along the nearby roadsides and fields. Again a watercolour paper was placed, adjusted to find an attractive positive of the shadow forms and then paint in the plants between these “negative patterns”.
